The obligation to inform the patient about the cancer registration (information obligation) is incumbent on the physician who makes the diagnosis.

The obligation to report applies to patients residing in Switzerland. Reports are made to the responsible cantonal cancer registry of the patient's canton of residence. The information is transmitted in writing, preferably electronically and with encryption in the form of existing medical documents or as structured data.

If the patient's age at diagnosis is under 20 years, they will be reported to the Childhood Cancer Registry. Information on cancer registration for children can be found on the Childhood Cancer Registry's website.

Compliance with this statutory reporting and information obligation is a professional obligation within the meaning of Art. 40 of the Medical Professions Act (MedBG/LPMéd).
